Depends on the Christian. Some are only out of #1 and only want to convert you to win brownie points with God but some are truly selfless and do good works. It varies really. Not all are the same. I'm sure there are altruistic Atheists, Buddhists, Jews, etc as well as completely self centered ones.
Religion doesn't automatically make you a good person.

Dear Dub a luc,
A Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Christ. And so Christ has set the example of caring about others before themselves- that's why He died on a cross- He gave himself for others.
Also Christ teaches us that it's faith in Him that saves us- not doing works- and so the idea that Christians are only concerned for their own salvation does not apply. A Christian can not earn His salvation. He serves God out of gratitude and love for the free gift of Salvation He has received- but doesn't earn it.
Good works are the result of being saved. In Ephesians it teaches that believers are saved by grace (God's free gift to them) but in the next verse it teaches that they were saved for good works that God had prepared beforehand for them. True Christians serve Christ because God has called them to it- not for their own interest of securing their own salvation.
Hope that helps. Kindly,
Nickster

Depends on definition of altruism. Basically, all creature's commit actions that are essentially tied to their own best interest and humans are no exception. Selfless actions are seen on battlefields, mothers protecting their young and so forth. I don't believe that a Christan is any more motivated by selfless actions than any other person. Most are unwilling to admit this and tend as a result to lie to themselves and others.

Christ teaches us:
Behold, the kingdom of God is within you. -Luke 17:20.
We are also taught:
Go ye into the world and preach the Gospel unto every creature. -Mark 16:15.
We must seek our own salvation within ourselves, AND be enough of an example to point the way for others.

if we were only concerned only for our own salvation then we wouldn't be harassed so much on this site from all you people that didn't believe...and telling us we are trying to force God down your throat, does that sound like some one who does not care, do you think we enjoy being ridiculed for trying to help and show people the way to God, and try and tell them of the horrors to come , do you think if we only cared about our self's we'd be doing that....i personally would rather be in bed cuddled up to my husband...but I have to try....whether you hate me or not...and I will keep on ....til I die so get use to me.....I'm here for the duration til Jesus comes back.....God Bless you,

Anytime we show concern for the salvation of others we get accused of "shoving it down their throats" so what are we supposed to do?

Due to the supernatural grace of God, a true Christian can be both totally selfless and totally selfish ... all at the same time.

Christians are just trying to get that free trip to Disneyworld they're giving away to the person who can bring the most people to their church. They're motivated by greed, envy, and hatred, just like the rest of us. They just refuse to turn in their good-guy badges.
