I dont think Anyone will change a certain habit unless there is some sort of reward that is greater than the benefit of the habit. They say people do things because it is beneficial to them which is sometimes not so obvious. If it is a habit such as smoking initially the habit made them feel cool ( if they started when they were young) Then the habit turned into an addiction. Once the habit becomes an addiction then it takes a lot to quit this habit. If it is just a habit you have to make the person believe there are great benefits to not participating and they truely have to see it and believe it or it just wont fly. Forcing won t work, resentment always happens and they will return to their habit.

my partner is trying to get me to quit smoking. i feel pressured at times, but knowing that he's doing it because he cares about me makes me feel so guilty... he even suggested he start smoking for a year as well, so we can do the quitting together... it struck me so hard. today i had half a cigarette 4hrs ago which is the longest i've been without a cigarette. i feel i have a part to play coz i know this man is doing this not for the fun of it, but because he wants to see 50 or so more healthy years with me... so i suppose the caring part counts a lot. if you make it known that its because you care about the person i suppose there would be some understanding...

you can't, you can tell your partner what you would like to see changed and why, and be supportive of them if they wish to change. but people will not give up their habits unless they themselves want to and no amount of force or begging or any other coercion will force them to
