Ok... To me the Museum means a lot... My dad took us there many years ago and I still remember it to this day... Laughing and rolling down the embankments of grass. I have been back a few times since then. But if you have never been there the stuff you will see are… You’ll see a bubbling lake of water and tar with 3 elephants (I could swear that they elephants used to make noise). Then you’ll make your way to the museum and there is a fee to get in (think it’s like $5)… While you’re here you will see plenty of fossils many of which were found in the area… and the interesting thing is that there still pulling stuff out of there. As far as it being overrated goes? It is what it is… it’s a place where you go to see fossils, so if you are into stuff like that you will love this place.
Universal studios are not too far it should take you a little under 30min to get there from the museum.

The Los Angeles County Art Museum is like right next door, if I am thinking of the right tar pits. I have never been in the Page museum, but the art museum is amazing. And the margurite exhibit at the moment is very good. The art museum, there is an entrance fee.

The Page Museum is only about 7 mile from Universal but will take about 20 minutes to drive. Admission Prices are Adults: $7.00, Seniors 62 and older and Students with I.D.: $4.50, Youths 13-17 years old: $4.50, Children 5-12 years old: $2.00, Members and Children under 5: Free. Parking is $6.00
I personally find the museum very interesting. It is small and does not take a long time to go through, but the displays are very well done and informative. Many people are disappointed because they expect to see dinosaur bones - but dinosaurs were not alive during the ice age.

I found the museum and the surrounding park quite interesting. You can find specific visitor information on their webiste at www.tarpits.org . While you're there, I'd suggest you also visit the nearby Peterson Automotive Museum, which is fascinating.
The tarpits (and the Peterson) are on Wilshire Boulevard, west of downtown L.A. and across the Hollywood Hills from Universal. If you're driving, it's a short jaunt down the Hollywood Freeway. You can also take the subway from Universal City to Wilshire/Vermont, and then transfer to the westbound rapid bus on Wilshire Boulevard.

It's generally inexpensive and free the first Tuesday of each month.
it's about 30-40 minutes from Universal studios. EVERY L.A. kid goes there at least once and they seem to like it...where else can you go to a substantial museum that gets it's displays on site. If you are lucky you might get to see a current excavation (during 2 months in the summer). It's right in the center of town so it is certainly convenient...It is on the miracle mile on Wilshire so you can also do some cool shopping while you are at it...Good Luck..

It's good if you like skeletons. I couldn't stand to see all of the dead animals. The Tar Pits are neat to visit, but if you love animals it's hard to visit the museum.

It's a little overrated as a museum, but it is different, so if you're visiting, you might as well go. It's far from Universal, but you can take a cab or maybe the hotel will have transportation.
