Several reasons.
For starters, kids don't go outside and play like they used to. Now they have cable, internet, videogames, etc.
Secondly, diet. Back in the day, families could usually survive on just a father's salary, and mom was always home to cook good, healthy meals. Fast food is more readily available now than before.

The rise in obesity has been too rapid to be attributed to genetic factors, and must thus reflect changes in eating patterns and levels of physical activity. There has been evidence of a decline in the number of young people playing sport at school. Mainly due to the fact that PE has now been substituted with music and art classes. Kids are only going to PE 2-3 times a week. The NASPE made a statement in 2003 saying that children 5-12 years of age should receive 60 minutes and up to several hours of physical activity per day. Also there has been an increase in the usage of gaming devices that keep children inside in front of the TV for hours. Leading to a sedentary lifestyle inadvertently causing obesity. The constant battle to save time also leads to obesity. Many people substitute a nice healthy breakfast at home to a that is quick and easy such as McDonald's or Whataburger. These fast food chains while convenient provide food that when eaten in excessive amounts continuously increase the weight of a person.

First of all, you have to realize it's not 'for free'. We make that same mistake here in the US, that a universal health care system would treat people 'for free'. Nobody really thinks it's -free-. We're really just arguing over how we pay for it. Bariatric surgery has been shown to be very cost-effective in the long run, and even our remarkably tight-fisted US commercial insurance companies are paying for it because they know it saves them money. Obese people who have it are MUCH less likely to have serious (and expensive) problems down the road like diabetes, cancer, heart problems, trouble with feet, knees, hips, etc. etc. So if you didn't pay one place, you'd pay somewhere else. If you look objectively at weight-loss, none of the alternatives really work very well. There are a million new fad diets, new 'drugs' that come out all the time, and if any of them worked well we wouldn't be seeing new ones all the time, right? You can't just -tell- someone to lose weight, it's a problem like addiction. Maybe someday we'll discover some minor operation you can do on the brain to make people lose weight, but at this point bariatric surgery is the most effective, and in the whole scheme of things, probably the cheapest. Besides, if you feel that fat people's weight problems are their own fault, what about smokers? What about people who ride motorcycles or do bungee-jumping or skydiving? Are you going to exclude those people too? Where do you draw the line?

There are many reasons for it. I blame society the most. Because both parents have to work there are a lot of latchkey kids just eating what they want infront of the TV. Kids can't go out and play like we did. Now we have to be extra careful they aren't abducted or hurt. Anymore, a family doesn't get to eat altogether more than about once a week, so what kind of food do the kids eat? Junk food, McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, etc. These are only a few reasons, there are many, many more I can think of, these are just the highlights.

For one the amount of junk food available is incredible. Years ago the only junk food available was potato chips, pretzels and cheetos. Now you can get all different kinds of chips, crackers, cookies and candy in every size and shape imaginable. Also how many households kept soda in the refrigerator back then? We sure didn't. We bought it for special occasions only. Now almost everyone has soda in the fridge. How many kids do you see outside playing tag in the yard or playing mother may I or other childhood outdoor games? I think you get the picture.

Fast food. Processed food. Too much sugar drinks.
These add toxins to their bodies. Toxins accumulate in the form of fat cells.
