Massage techniques such as effleurage and pettrisage should be performed in the direction of the blood flow - towards the heart (venous return). This stimulates the blood and lymphatic systems, encouraging oxygen and nutrients to deliver around the body more quickly as well as reducing any build up of lymphatic fluid and toxins in the tissues.
If you are studying beauty/ holistic therapies, I recommend you read Massage for Holistic therapists by Francesca Gould as this will give you a good basic knowlege of Anatomy and Physiology and the different types of massage techniques used. In the back you will also find a listing of all the relevant Acts in regards to Health and Safety.

Any massage must be done in a certain direction to promote the flow of blood back to the heart.
If having just a facial massage, it is to help not to tear the tissue inappropriately. Make sure they are not massaging too hard, also.
But, first sentence is the answer.
What do YOU mean by Beauty Therapy--facial massage ??

Massage involves applying pressure to targeted body parts. We usually apply pressure towards the heart as this aids the blood circulation in the body by bringing the blood faster to the heart where it obtains oxygen to be distributed around the body again.
