Same reason you'd eat at a yummy restaurant today even if a better restaurant is moving in town in two years.

The way you worded your question was extremely amusing. Why would we cut off our noses? XP is an old-school OS. Ubuntu and Vista are much sexier. However, Ubuntu can't game and Vista can't really game yet either, due to 2nd-rate drivers. Does anybody still hang on to Windows 98? Very few do; most have transitioned into XP. The same goes for XP; most people will gradually buy the newer OS, Vista. When Windows Vienna comes out, new computers will include copies of the OS. By then, I am sure that people will gradually transition to it as well.

I dont see many compelling reasons to get Vista now. Having said that, MS's time frame has been adjusted many times on "Vista". It was supposed to have shipped with far more features than it contains...And as long as 2 years ago as well. Don't hold your breath on Vienna keeping to schedule..But as I see it, it's a separate issue....

Assuming your computer can run Vista smoothly, which it probably won't be able to unless you got a higher end machine, then its probably better to wait for Vienna.

Because support for Windows XP will be gone soon, XP will have no more patches or anything so your hurting yourself when it comes to virus attacks.

Trust me, even though Microsoft says they will, it doesn't mean they will actually hit that deadline.
I don't know if you noticed how long games like Half-Life 2 were delayed. It was a year or so.
