Epiphytes don't necessarily grow in soil. Some gets their nutriction by either being parasitic or have ways to hold water that falls by rain.

The true parasites have no chlorophyll and gets its sugar from the host. Some epipghytes like bromeliads have green leaves that catch or hold water. They have ways to attach to the host plant and often need sticky seeds to spread to other trees.

Some Lichens don't technically grow in soil. They grow directly upon rocks and trees. They are symbiotes that combine plant algae and fungi. They use special acids to disolve the substate they live upon and are thought to be soil makers. However they can"t compete against regular plants in soils since they grow very slowly.

Epiphytes - plants that grow on trees. They may be parasites in which case they may be green - partial or facultative parasites. If they lack chlorophyll and are totally dependent on the tree for their food they are known as obligative parasites. But plants just growing on other plants are epiphytes.
