He just gets nervous when you leave him alone he will eventually out grow this. in the mean time try leaving on some sooting music when you leave the house and try putting him in the crate when you are home too right now he is associateing it with abandoment.

The crate could be too big. It should only be big enough for the dog to lie down, turn around, and stand. Dogs usually won't soil their sleeping area. That said, he's just a baby. Mistakes will happen. He could had anxiety issues about your absence, even if it is just a short period of time. When you leave in the morning to take the kids to school, leave something with your scent in the crate. Also, something safe for him to chew on. Make sure it is something SAFE because you wont be there if he starts to choke.

He *is* house broken, just not in the way you want. He sees his crate as the place to go to the bathroom inside. :)

Start using his crate more often. Feed him meals in it, put him in it while you run errands, let him sleep in it, etc. You will need to start small and work up to it. Speaking of small, it may be that the crate is really big for your puppy. A crate divider can help bring it down to puppy-size. Puppies don't like to lie in poop any more than babies, so it'll help encourage him to keep the crate clean.

On the walks - It's not frequency, it's timing. Take him for slightly longer walks so that he has a good opportunity to exercise his bowels outdoors. When he eats, he needs to go out. When he wakes up, he needs to go out. When he plays for a little while, he needs to go out.

Just hang in there, make some small changes, and it'll get better.

Do you mean that he goes potty in his crate or that he just gets in his crate? If he is just getting in his crate there is nothing to worry about, and it actually means that he feels safe and likes his crate. If he is pottying in his crate, he may just not do all of his pottying outside. I would just start putting puppy pee pads in his crate so it is easier to clean up and he should grow out of it.

The crate may be too big. You can also try disinfecting if really good every time he does it. Also try putting numberous toys in the crate with him. He may just be bored.

I think that he is insecure. How long have you had the puppy? Is he still getting used to being away from mom?
