I'm 14 and have been working since October of '06. My company gave me a W2, whatever that is, and told me it's for taxes. I've had people tell me I have to pay them and I've had others I don't. Do I or not?

give it to your parents. they will claim you. where are you working at age 14?
by giving you a W-2 form, the company IS claiming you, so the government is going to know that you've worked. as for how you file taxes, that is a question for the IRS or a tax company. your parents will probably know, or be able to find out.

You won't owe anything, and are not required to file. But if anything was deducted for federal income tax withholding, then you should file to get your money refunded to you. If nothing was withheld, then you don't have any reason to file this year. Look at box 2 and if it's zero, just put the paper away someplace and don't worry about it - if it's not zero, then that's the amount you can get refunded to you if you file.

You can use a 1040 EZ form. Be sure to check the box on line 5 that says YOU. Talk to your parents - they can probably help you with it. If you need help, post here again or email me. DON'T pay somebody to do it for you - it's too easy for that.

If you earned more than $5,150, you must file a tax return. If you earned less than that but had income tax withheld you are entitled to a refund of those taxes. You must file a tax return to get that money.

You probably already paid the taxes. If you file an income tax return, you'll probably get money BACK! :-)
