rather than a "do as I do" type of, um ... God? He doesn't seem to set the example. Is that why Jesus was introduced?

Yes, the New testament God is a kinder and more gentle God than the harsh, vindictive Old Testament Jehovah.

Part of the reason Jesus was introduced was to set the example.

But you're wrong that the God in the Old Testament didn't set an example.

He gave Adam life and life to all the world, and gave Adam Eve, and gave them a Garden of Eden, a paradise. Even when they broke his rule, he had mercy on them even though he dispelled them.

God saved good people through his warning to Noah.

He did lots of good things in the Old Testament.

No.God I believe, intended his word to be a guide to a way of living and to warn us of the dangers of wrong doing in his eyes. Many out there can tell you that woe to he or she that defies his word, for they could be punished in a way that they never expected.God gave his son so we might be saved from our sins. When you accept him you will see more clearly and begin to prosper in ways that you never imagined.

If he was a, "do as I say, not as I do," God, then he wouldn't have given people free will.
