on the new flat screen hdtv's,, do the black edges still appear on the screen if its widescreen format?

since the new ones are 16/9 size aspect , while regular tv's are 3/2 would the letterbox not apply?

Depends how the movie was made. If the movie was made in 16/9 aspect, then there will be no black stripes on top and bottom. However, movies are made in a variety of aspect ratios, so it is quite possible to still have those stripes.

If the show comes in widescreen format it wont come in with the black bars 98% of the time. However there are some shows that still make it letterbox. but on most tv's you can elimnate the boxs, i know my does.
