I'm sure it was the first idiot who didn't get his way and a nervous junior manager said "of course Sir the customers always right!" and it just weaved its way in like the rest of our " sacred " slogans.

I believe the "customer is always right" quote is attributed to JC Penny. As for whether he should be shot, there's a lot of people who'd say it should be the other way around! Too many businesses assume the customer is never right. But if it weren't for the customers, the business wouldn't exist.
