nothing actually makes you smarter for test taking.
caffeine and sweets are good for a short test - lets say under an hour or two. but if you are taking the MCATs or GREs or such, which requires a good 4+ hours you do NOT want to take these. caffeine and the sweets will give you a high, and when it wears off you will be actually slower at test taking than before. not to mention coffee, diarrhetic, so you'll need to piss it out soon after you drink it. you do not want to sit there taking a test, holding in your piss.
when i took a kaplan course for professional school exams they recommended, simple sugars, fruits and such. and for a drink something like gatorade. these have sugars, but simple sugars rather than complex sugars which are more digestible, and the energy is more accessible for your body.

A few years ago I read about a study that was done which showed that if you eat a specified snack during class or while studying and then eat it again during your test, your brain is stimulated to remember what you learned. I'm a nursing student and I tried this. Every time I had lecture class or study group I always ate peanut butter m&m's and drank a Dr.Pepper then on test day, during my test I'd have the same snack. Never made below an A on a test all semester and was never a straight A student before this. The snack can be anything-I just picked what I liked. Good luck with your research!

Although nothing can make you smarter without hard core studying, cinnamon has been known in studies to enhance skills, and sets off triggers in the mind to aid in remembering material. Chewing gum also helps during tests.
