The employer directed you to take a flight like that but didn't reimburse you? Sounds a little odd. I would not expect that to be accepted as a deduction.

That was not at the direction of the employer, it is a legal requirement of the Citizenship and Immigration Service. You are required to secure the visa at a US Embassy in your home country.

Most companies pay for those flights home for their H1B visa holder employees, mine certainly does. But it is not business travel and is not deductible by you.
