Engineers do a variety of things related to building new things, improving things that already exist, or just coming up with better ways of doing something.

In essence, they apply their knowledge of the real world (science) with experience and imagination to improve how certain things are done. This can be as complicated as designing a new computer or as simple as figuring out a better way to organize your closet to find things.

Many people think that engineers are nerds that spend their days doing complicated math problems for no reason. Instead, many engineers are people who like to build things and like to get their hands dirty in the process by tinkering with things along the way.

Some engineers design things, some write instructions and draw drawings so whatever has been designed is built right, and others inspect things to make sure that they have been built properly.

Sometimes, in small companies, there are only one or two engineers and they do everything. In large corporations they tend to specialize and do the same sorts of work all the time. This does not mean that the work is repetitive: every project is slightly different.

As with many professions, you either love it or hate it. If your talents and interests lie in engineering, you do it because you like it and the money is just a perk. If you hate it, your job is an unending misery that no amount of money can make up for.

There are a lot of schools that offer Introduction to Engineering course: take one and see if you like it.

Engineers solve the problems of everyday life, and turn future visions into realities. Poets dream of the future. Scientists figure out what parts of those dreams can be made real with our current understanding of the world, and try to expand that current understanding along the way. Engineers take the dreams that scientists say can be made real, and make them real.

Some engineers focus on "requirements" - figuring out how to specify all the details about what needs to be done to solve a problem or create something that's needed.

Some engineers focus on design. They think up the best solutions that meet the requirements, but that don't waste extra time or money doing things that are not needed.

Some engineers focus on implementing designs. They actually go out and build the things that were designed.

Some engineers focus on testing what's built to make sure it does what it's supposed to do. They test the things built to make sure they really do satisfy the original requirements.

Finally, some engineers focus on operations and maintenance. They train folks to use the new things, maintain the new things when they break, and figure out ways to improve the new things over time.

Many engineers do more than one of the above, following their part of a system from the beginning concept through the final delivery and operation.

They are supposed to "Engineer" things.

What does it mean to "Engineer" something?
Well, it is applying knowledge to make something better or design something completely new using previously gained knowledge. It is equivalent to being a scientist or an inventor.

They also drive big trains and carry big calculators.
