Church but it could be because I haven't seen a really pretty chapel at this point. Truth be told if my significant other wasn't Catholic I might be pushing for this theatre in Louisville, KY. I saw a concert there that when they dropped the lights it appeared like the ceiling had disappeared and we were staring at a starlit sky. It was gorgeous.

The difference between a chapel and a church is the religious affiliation. A chapel will not require you to complete pre-marital counseling or be a member of the congregation. Chapels are either non denominational or business oriented. An Example of a chapel is the Chapel in a hospital or a funeral home as well as the wedding chapel. Don't dismiss funeral chapels for very small weddings. My husband works for a group of funeral homes and all of the chapels that this company has are very pretty, some more so than some of the churches and halls that I have seen marketed to weddings. It is really a personal preference. I personally prefer the Chapel because there are less restrictions on the usage (some churches will not allow secular (non-religious) music or photography or videography during the ceremony.

Contrary to one of the previous posters, there are several types of chapels. Some chapels are non-denominational (i.e., colleges, hospitals, prisons) while other are affiliated with specific denominations. In fact, some larger churches have a chapel attached or within the church to provide a smaller more intimate place to worship. Chapels vary in size. Some are small, while others can be as quite large. Each chapel also varies in terms of requirements for marriage. There are some chapels that do require pre-marital counseling while others don't. Just like churches, chapels vary in size and aesthetics so I don't have a preference. You should pick your ceremony location based on what is important to you (denomination, size, aesthetics, etc.). You can easily find a church or chapel that fits whatever your criteria may be.

I've always liked the idea of a tiny chapel. Seems so romantic :)
