saving face means that you are adding something to cover something else you've said or done that may have been embarrassing .....to save face .... save embarrassment .... save the situation . I would think that the expression " save some face" is just an upbeat way of saying the same thing .

For Asians, this concept is about having self respect.
Save some face would mean that in a situation where you will be humiliated, you should always find a way to ensure that you do not lose all of your self esteem, self respect and honour.

Avoid humiliation or embarrassment, preserve dignity, as in Rather than fire him outright, they let him save face by accepting his resignation. The phrase, which uses face in the sense of "outward appearances," is modeled on the antonym lose face. [Late 1800s]

It's like saying "save yourself a little dignity". To lose face is to lose that which defines you, like morals or character. When you are saving face...or to save face...it's after you mess up and you don't want anyone to equate you with a mistake which makes you look bad because of your previous image being...opposite of that. You save your previous image. You save your previous "face"....save face.

If someone tells you to "save face" what they're saying is quit whatever you're doing before you embarass yourself, or show emotion about the situation.
