No, any dog will not mess where they sleep. It's a well known fact with caring for dogs. Dogs are easily trained in a crate. Not only for toilet reasons but for obedience reasons as well. He will be fine in the crate while you sleep. Just let him out side before you go to bed. Keep a blanket in there so he can lay down and be comfortable, a bowl with a little water and maybe a few toys or bones. He will be fine when you get up in the morning. He might be a little anxious to go out side, which is a good thing. Praise him big time when he does go potty out side, give him a treat too. They love praise and treats, the combination goes hand in hand when it comes to house training a dog. Good luck in your training, I hope this helped.

There are a lot of variables to this question.
1) how old is the dog - general rule of thumb, 1 hr (daytime) = 1 month old
**Usually by about 4 mos, puppy can sleep through the night ok
2) where did you get the puppy from?
**if it is from a puppy mill, a lot of times the dog has no choice but to excrete in its living space, so it becomes accustomed to doing so, and will do so in its crate
3) dog
**MOST dogs do not like to be in their own feces, but some don't care

My two cents:
It is fine to leave the puppy in the crate at night. As long as you are willing to get up in the middle of the night to let him out. if not, then put him in a playpen. During the day, if you're going to be gone for more than an hour, give the puppy somewhere to eliminate.
IMPORTANT: If you have a large breed puppy (something that is going to be more than 30 lbs as an adult), get a wire crate with a divider so that you don't have to buy 5 crates for one dog. A puppy should be able to turn around and lay down in the crate...nothing more. If the crate is too big, then the dog will pee/poo in one corner, and sleep in the other; thus defeating the whole purpose of using crates as a method of potty training
Also, if you are putting the dog in the crate at night, then make sure to put the crate in your room. Dogs are pack animals. They like to be with us.

Some dogs will mess in their crates, some will not. I always put a puppy pad in the crate with mine when they were young. That way if they do have to go, it is absorbed and doesn't make a huge mess. Most dogs won't do it long, only when they are very small, but some will do it continuously. I have a border collie that does it all the time. She figured out that it means getting back out. It doesn't matter if she had gone out ten times in the last hour to go to the bathroom, she will still go so that I will get her out and give her a bath. I guess she has it figured out! 9 hours is far too long for a puppy to be locked in a crate without going outside. You can do it, but it will prolong housetraining quite a bit. If I were you, I would get up at least once, take him out to do his business, and then you can go back to sleep. Just give him a chance to go outside like he should and not in his crate. Also if you leave him in there too long and he can't hold it any longer and messes in his crate, it can lead to him having negative feelings about his crate.

A puppy without bladder control might. (Revision: all young animals do not have good control of their bowels and bladder for a few months or so.) An older dog never should have a problem "holding it". The crate should be just big enough for your dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around. Otherwise they will "mess" one end and sleep in the other. You can leave him overnight and he should be fine. At the beginning he might "mess" but you should NEVER scold for an overnight accident. He will have no idea why you are angry. In addition, take him out right before he is crated and right after you take him out.

we have a new puppy who we are trying to crate train. She does not piddle OR poodle in her crate....we just make sure we take her out first thing in the AM and another time in the afternoon and when my hubby gets home from work. Matilda is part chihuahua and part pug....We call her a CHUG!
She stays in her crate a couple of hours in the morning and again in the afternoon. She then stays in it for about 7-8 hours a night...sleeping. We have found it helpful to cover her crate with an old flannel sheet so she has less distractions while sleeping and napping.
Don't give your dog anything to eat before bed time.
IF he does piddle or poodle in the cage, it is only that he can't hold it anymore, So it is important to limit what he eats and drinks in the evening.
Matilda is mainly an inside dog, going out right now just to do her business and get fresh air. When she gets older (she is 3 months now) we will let her out in a fenced area.
Dogs are "good people"!

Generally speaking a dog will not mess his bed or crate. Generally speaking. That is not to say that it doesn't happen. Usually when it does it is because the dog does not like the crate, or they are being kept in it too long among other things. If your dog is happy and well adjusted it should not be a problem. As far as 9 hours. That is probably too long. However I have had some dogs that did very well for 8 to nine hours but that was very rarely. You should be able to easily crate train your dog for 6 to 8 hours but you must work up to it. I have heard some vets say that overly crated dogs can develop prostrate problems later on in life from have to "hold them selves" too long. My dogs come wake me up when they have to go outside and they have never been crated past the age of 8 to 9 months or after being a part of my family for 6 months for the ones i adopted.

That is not true. Dogs prefer not to go in a crate, because then they're close to it, but if they have to, they will. If your dog is going in the crate, either it's used to being in a crate too much (in which case, if you didn't rescue the dog from a puppymill, you may wish to let the dog out earlier) or it's having accidents due to inability to hold it, such as being too young, or being ill, such as diabetes.

Crating the dog at night is a good housebreaking tool, but you didn't state the age of your dog. If your dog is less than 9 - 10 months old, you should expect to wake at least once during the night to let the dog have a potty break. Otherwise the dog will mess in the crate, learn to live with it, and you will have a harder time housebreaking your dog.

If your dog is still a puppy, of course he will go when he has to go. How big is his crate? How about leaving his crate in the bathroom with the crate door open, and newspapers on the floor? It takes time for muscle control to develop, so take him for a walk just before you go to bed, and then again, the very first thing in the morning. No animal likes to be dirty, so it is your job to help him learn, even if you have to sleep a little less for a couple of months. Best wishes

If it's a pup, and you are house training, that might be too long. If they can't hold it, they will mess in their crate, and you will have the pleasure of cleaning up. Just please make sure you let the dog outside right before you go to bed. And put some newspapers as well as a blanket for the dog in the crate. Take care.

That depends on when you fed him- you have to make sure you do not put him in his crate within 3 hours of eating- and you should be okay but don't forget, like humans, they get sick and have accidents too- and that can happen so put paper under the crate and make sure you have a nice soft blanket in there for him to lie on--- or better yet, if you REALLY don't want to worry about him messing, have him sleep with you--- he will then wake you up if he needs to, and that is very rare, only when they are sick-- my two dogs sleep with me.........besides, they are so loving how could you leave him in a cold hard crate instead of a bed?
