"And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed; to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her."

Many places in the Bible, God allows slavery. Why?
Did God eventually decide slavery is bad? Or is it still okay with him? Answers from church people appreciated.

it would be egocentric to assume understanding of such a different culture. I'm sure if they were to look at our culture they would be appalled as well. The bible speaks of a culture that would sacrifice their own children to fire for hope of a better life. That is exactly what abortion is today as living babies in the womb are burned by saline solution. When God gave this law to the Iraelites, they had been a people wandering in the desert for 40 years. They had rebelled and taken back the forms from which they came from, out of slavery in Egypt. God brought them freedom but they chose sin instead.

Look carefully at the words.. ' dealt deceitfully...no power to "sell" her to a "third party".
"let her be redeemed". The arrangement nullified.
also take into account that the death penalty applied to anyone reducing the girl's value as a wife. that means that the 'master' of her as a maidservant could not use her as a sexual toy.
If she was unsuitable a a servant, she had to be returned to her Father as a chaste virgin.
And these days, are we not ' slaves' to out job.
We might get paid, but we still have to ' obey' our ' master', our employer.

God is trying to inject fairness into the slave trade that was unfortunately already in existence then. If you look carefully at the bible, especially the Jubilee, God says to set the slaves FREE.

God did not allow anyone to own anything or other persons.
That is - even written in the 'holy'¨bible - an invention of mankind.

God can be a jerk sometimes, we can't judge God by man's standards. Look at the whole deal with God telling Abraham to kill his own kid, and then saying "just kidding" at the last moment. So maybe slavery is all good with God.
