There was only one Christian Church existing in the world until about the 15th century ... the Catholic Church, which had been known as such since 107 AD.
Those who would not accept the truth of Christ fought against the church, the apostles, and disciples, and brutally persecuted them in Jerusalem, and elsewhere.
All but one of th original apostles were martyred, and even that was not for lack of trying.
Until the 4th century, when Constantine converted to the true faith and legitimized Christianity, Christians were routinely perscuted and brutally murdered by the Roman government, and also by the Jews, whenever they could get away with it.
After the fall of the Roman empire, the Church emerged as the only world superpower.
From that time forward, anyone who persisted in teaching faleshoods, or in spreading heresy would be subject to the sanctions of both the church and the secular governments.
In the 15th century, Protestant reformers teamed up with certain secular European rulers to stage a revolt against the power of the church, in which they did quite a bit of their own persecution and murders.
The practice continued for hundreds of years, right up until the 1990's in Northern Ireland.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

they were accused as heretics and the inquisitors would burn them any one could be accused as a heretic kings were excommunicated from the church since they challenged the papacy or even some people were accused as witches and also burned. most people didn't know how to challenge the church they only knew what the priest said until the printing press which was also considered a evil thing because now free thoughts could be put on paper and spread around which is why the church declared it a heresy to use the printing press.

Like the Gnostic Gospels?
Well, we know what happened to them. They were buried for 16 centuries.

If they rejected the teaching of God's Church, they were not members of God's Church by their own choice, and therefore did not have access to the means by which they might have eternal life.

There were no Roma catholics in the first century. The first use of the term "catholic" was in 197 CE in the writings of Apollonius.

It was considered treason - they were terminated. It wasn't just the Catholics either. I'm pretty sure that Protestants also persecuted the Anglicans around the 14th/15th century.

What happened to them? Killed or otherwise suppressed. You can throw some torture in there too probably.
