I am thinking of going to Bali in a few months, during a vacation out in Asia. Has anyone been there before? What is the best area of the island and/or hotel to stay at? What things do I have to check out/do while I am there? Where are the best beaches? How much do flights typically cost from Hong Kong and Singapore to Bali? Thanks!

Hi there,
You didnt mention your preferences, I highight some option to each of your Q:
Best Area:
Kuta: island center, packed with tourist, full of bars and cafe, used to be the best beach in Bali but not its too crowded. Great place to hang-out. Best Hotel is Hard Rock Bali.

Ubud: its more to mauntain side, lots of high-class resort, its good if you look for peace and quiet holiday. Best Hotel: Alila.

Nusa Dua: this is an upscale area with branded hotels that reside next to the beach. Mostly are private beach. You can surely enjoy your sun-bathing without having too many crowd around. Very Nice indeed!! However, to get to the center of nitelife (Kuta) will take like 15-20 min taxi.

Jimbaran: also upscale area (Intercontinental, Hilton), next to famous seafood restaurant, where you can eat-till-you-drop.

Benoa: its a water-sport area. It has newly built hotels. Mostly are OK.

Best beach: Dreamland (but no recommended resort/hotels nearby), Lovina (dolphin watch), Nusa Dua.

What you have to check-out is: sacred temple, water-sport, art and craft (Ubud area), monkey forest, colored lake (Danau Batur)...

go check www.baliselection.com...it has list of hotels in each area..

Hope this help. Enjoy!

Yes, I have. In October of 2002 when the terrorists attacked a nightclub in Kuta on the day, of all things, my own birthday (Oct. 12)! as much as I love the Balinese people in particular and the Indonesian people in general, I will never want to come back to Bali again.

Vietnam is the place for me and my family to vacation in Asia these days. I hope that Vietnam is on your itinerary as well. It's the best kept vacation secret in the whole world and what a paradise! The country is so safe and secure, clean and orderly but full of life and activities. And the people! I've never seen a friendlier and more helpful people than the Vietnamese. The food is the best this side of heaven and the prices are so low you can't afford not to shop there!

If I were you, I wouldn't go to any Islamic country or a country with an Islamic area for a very longtime (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines...). Instead, I'll go to places like Vietnam or extend my stay there. A side trip to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat is also much recommended.

I'm Balinese. Bear already answer most of your question.

But if you'll stay in Kuta Area, please be careful with the pickpocket, especially in Kartika Plaza street. They're not native Balinese, they're from other Island of Indonesia.

And also if you'll stay in Kuta or Jimbaran Area, pls be careful with the terrorist. They could attack you at any moment. They're not native Balinese, they're from other Island of Indonesia. Balinese are Hindu !!!

I suggest you should stay in Nusa Dua or Ubud. Then I'll guarantee you'll have the best vacation of your life.

I have been there like 10 times and it sucked every time I got there! There are just too must tourists and because of that, I think that they just have to reduce the amount of people; which will never happen, naturally.
