For the first quote - (choosing doubt as a philosophy of life is like choosing immobility as a means of transportation) - in both cases you go nowhere. You are stuck.

For the second quote - he is basically saying that animals are animals and to view them as some version of a human is a mistake. In religion and in zoology, humans tend to put themselves as the focus. But animals could often care less about humans. We can't really bridge the gap between them and us. To try and do so is an error.

Once I doubted my transpotation too. Then and there I knew that animals were animals also.
