Staying mentally active seems to help prevent or at least delay the development of dementia..... so, do you think that the Internet overall will end up helping prevent dementia? Or is surfing just mindless activity (for most people) that will promote dementia in old age?

If you are just mindless clicking from page to page, without absorbing any content, or showing any real interest, then it's probably not beneficial. If you're using the 'net to do research, or read up on topics that interest you, then it will help.
It's like channel surfing. Are you watching the shows or just clicking, clicking, clicking always looking for something else? There are interesting shows you can learn from on many channels but you need to watch and absorb and retain the knowledge.
The more pathways are built in your brain (through learning and doing cross-brain physical activity) the longer you can go before you show symptoms of AD. Doesn't mean you don't HAVE it or won't GET it, just that your brain will hold up longer. Hopefully until you die of something else.
