For budget camera that isnt really pocket size the Canon A630

i'd recommend you canon... especially the a- series since you have a tight budget.. in this case the canon a740... it has swivel screen, manual functions which will come in handy.
canon has a long history in this field and their photo qualities is excellent compared to it's rivals..

It really depends on how much you want to spend. Nikon, and Olympus are both very good brand names
