were only two people running the shop? One at the register and one cooking and preparing the food.

Hypothetical. This place is a specialty food place where you can't get this kind of sandwich anywhere else in town. How would you treat the people who run the place if it is your favorite place to eat?

Depends on if you have to clear the table or not. If not, then I'd leave a $1. Most people don't. And if you have to go get your meal vs someone bringing it to your table makes a difference as well.

I believe in tipping, so long as the people were pleasant. I dont care if they own the place (I know you dont have to tip the owner) or there are only a couple of people I leave a tip. The base starts at about 50% and falls from there depending on how the person is but on the other side of that coin the tip never falls past 5% but in order to get that you must have done something horribly wrong.

I do tip at deli's but not every time and not like how i tip at a restaurant. A mom and pop place they get all the profit it is no like they are making the 2.13 hr or what ever that wait staff make. I will drop a dollar or two in the jar but not every time. My grand parent ran businesses their hole life, restaurants, grocery stores, a bar and pool hall and never put out a tip jar of course times were different. You get paid on the profit of the business. Now if you hire some employees i can see spliting the tips between them

Let them know that it is your favorite place.
Tell all your friends about it.
Definately leave a tip. Is there a tip jar? If not I guess the one who prepares the food would get the tip.

TIP RULE - #1 !!!!
NEVER TIP THE OWNER/OPERATOR.

as far as being a repeat customer - they know that you like what they have and you prove that each and every time you enter their establishment. That is one "big tip" in that of it's self.
