Not just kisses and hugs, but any kind of gentle, non-abusive attention and contact will let your cat know how you feel. My cats like their play time, one more than the other, but they also live for their love time. My oldest takes it any time she can get it, but my youngest will come looking for it when he's ready. Even laying next to me or on me and being petted to sleep lets them know their place with me.

Not only does she understand she will likely kiss you back. Cats can be very affectionate when it suits them to be. My cat gives me kisses all the time. Her favorite time is about 3:15am when I am sound asleep.

cats are solitary animals and like to be held on thier terms, not yours, also many times when you pet a cat, such as rub its back, it causes static electricity that a human doesnt feel, animals are much more sensitive to other stimuli, and therefor dont like the hugging and stuff. it is best to let your cat be the boss, if you dont force her, and she is an only pet, chances are she will began to sit on your lap and even sleep on your chest, cats unlike dogs are into pleasing themselves and not the owner

No, they don't understand hugs and kisses the way we do, but they DO know we're initiating close, affectionate contact. Cats do this with each other for affection....so when you're lovin' on 'em, yeah, they get it:)

I think they understand. Everytime I hug and kiss my cats, they purr like hell. They completely understand.

I think so one thing if a cat rubs it's head against ur head and licks you she is showing you she trusts you and is marking you and that she considers you a part of her family. And cats consider their owners to be substitute mothers.

it depends on her reaction, some cats hate being hugged and some love it. if she looks happy and/or is purring and being affectionate to you, then she understands and likes it. if she puts her ears back or hisses and looks mad, then try just petting her instead and talking to her softly. it's all about her body language.

Yes she does, animals know when humans display affection if you speak to her baby talk she also knows that she may not know what your saying but she knows your showing your love and she does the same when she "speaks" to you and purrs.
