It's incredible how many people say they want to LOOSE weight...it's LOSE, not LOOSE!

I'm just saddened by the state of our educational system. It's not just lose/loose...the spelling on this board is absolutely horrendous.

English has appropriated parts of many different languages and syntaxes that make consistent spelling rules impossible. Many people have spelling problems due to the fact that English lacks the consistency that other languages have. This is further complicated by differences in spelling between English English and American English. Technically, we don't know how to spell "color" (colour everywhere else that speaks English).

The difference between lose and loose isn't in the "o" sound, as spelling would suggest, but in how we pronounce the "s."

If you're going to criticize someone for spelling errors, or demand that someone learn to speak English, for that matter, bear in mind that this is one of, if not the most difficult language in the world to deal with.

Very occasionally, I will use www.merriamwebster.com, but I usually don't have to. I can't speak for others. I can only surmise that they are too lazy, too stupid, are poorly educated, or this is not their first language. In any case, I have gotten over it as you should, also. It's not incredible at all. It's just a fact of life. It would be like asking why people don't know how to drive. It's not going to change a thing, so we just learn to drive defensively. As long as you know what they mean, then communication has taken place and perfect spelling is a moot point. I occasionally get annoyed at the misuse of effect and affect, but so what? I noticed, after reading several of your answers, that your halo has a tarnish or two also. You say "ok" instead of "okay" and you often neglect to use commas where you should. The point is, relax and have fun. You and I aren't likely to get people to change.

I think most people know. They're just too lazy to bother checking their spelling and like to use netspeak a lot.
