thank you to those who have answered so quickly. if what i am feeling is normal healing, how often can i take the prescribed pain medication safely. If i take it every 3-4 hous as needed is that harmful?

If something more is wrong, such as a fracture due to the post, can that be fixed? and how? At what point do I know if that is a possiblility? a couple days a week?

If there is a fracture in the root, then your dentist or your endodontist will diagnose that. If it is fractured, they can sometimes see it on an xray or would have seen it when they were doing the root canal. Take your prescription as explained on the label and if the pain is getting WORSE, you could call your office right away. If the pain is the SAME, possibly wait a couple days and see if it's better then.

And kind of as the DDS above me stated, sometimes ibuprofen will also help if alternated with the prescribed pain killer.

TITLEIST,
NORMALLY THE DIRECTIONS SAY TO TAKE IT EVERY 4-6 HOURS. I HAVE FOUND THAT THE NAPROXEN YOU'RE ON WILL DO MORE FOR YOU THAN THE ACTUAL PAIN MEDS.
WHY?
NAPROXEN IS AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MED. I'VE FOUND THAT MY PATIENTS BENEFIT GREATLY FROM IBUPROFEN (MOTRIN) THAN THEY DO FROM TAKING NARCOTIC MEDS LIKE VICODIN OR TYLENOL3.
IF THE ROOT ON #8 IS FRACTURED, EXTRACTION MAY BE THE ONLY OPTION. THE TOOTH HAS TO BE EVALUATED FOR A POTENTIAL FRACTURE.
