The red light is used in CIC (Combat Information Center) and near all exits to preserve "night-vision"... and actually in CIC in 1997 we had blue lights. Also it's used near the exits (hatches) to reduce the possibility of being sighted by another vessel.

The Pentagon was started JUST prior to World War II, so it was NOT intended as a FORT... though it may have been intended to represented the old forts... the PRIME concern was fitting as MANY people into the square footage in the acreage while staying under four-stories

Completed in 1943, The Pentagon was the largest office building in the country at that time covering 29 acres and housing 17.5 miles of corridors.

Combination of answers here are correct! Red light is for low light vision. Pentagon was built to resemble a fort! Rings in concentric formation with the most important on the inside. E-Ring

See my link for the Pentagon, It's design was caused by many factors not the least of was to house 40,000 workers and not be more than 5 stories high.
The Red Light helps your low light vision, when operating at night it prevents you from losing vision when going from a Lighted Space(Red lights) to outside. In other words it helps you keep your night vision. Also on a darkened ship, or vehicle for that matter, if red lights are used in hatches to the outside it does not provide a bright white light for enemies to spot if the hatch is opened unexpectedly.

I cant say about the light thing, but I have heard about the shape of the Pentagon, its odd structure may aid in keeping the building intact in case of an explosion or nuclear attack.

the pentagon is shaped the way it is because originally it was designed as a defense fort and made to see all sides for portection as far as red lights they are used to blend in better with flames explosions etc as well as giving bright enough light to see clearly in fog or bad weather answered by usmc e-6 ssgt raymond

The red light preserves your low light vision (now they are saying blue is just as effective). As for the shape of the Pentagon, I dunno, but dumb looks are still free.
