I agree to a point. A friend and i actually spend our weekends drving around chasing after and picking up and finding homes for strays in my area. People who breed for money are not animal lovers, they do not care about their animals at all. There is a difference between breeders that breed a lot of animals just for money and breeders that are doing it to better the breed and actually breed very little animals and encourage other people to rescue animals as well. I wish people would have to get a license or something if they wanted to breed, but i don't see that happening any time soon. Just barely this year there was made a law against keeping a dog chained all the time here in California, yet dogs have been kept chained and neglected for a very long time.

Seeing as the culprits are the irresponsible owners allowing their dogs to have litters of mutts, I don't see why you would think stopping the real breeders would have any effect. A recent UNBIASED study found that only 6% of shelter dogs are purebred. Why do you think the irresponsible owners would bother complying with any kind of ban, they would just dump the puppies by the road.
Furthermore, do you have any idea what a few years of no breeding would do the the gene pools, particularily in the rarer breeds???
This is part of the problem, people pushing for laws or bans when they have no knowledge of the subject. If you want to push for something, work for enforcement of leash laws, that *works* without hurting good owners/.breeders! If AC wouldn't allow dogs to roam the streets, there would be much fewer unwanted litters born and much fewer attacks as well. Give huge fines and court appearances when someones dog is picked up Of course the politicians don't want to do this because it would be unpopular with voters.

Yes, and why don't we put a ban on having children too since there are so many already in this world that do not have homes. It sounds a little like Communism, but I am sure that it would help with overpopulation. Right?
Just so you know, I do have a rescued dog that was going to be put to sleep because of all of the abuse that he had endured. Thankfully a rescue saved him and then I adopted him, but instead of preaching about banning purebred dogs people need to start advocating spaying/neutering and demanding higher punishment for people that abuse animals.
I guess people just are not getting the sarcasm!!

I agree to a certain extent.(not the hunting). Some people prefer purebreds as showdogs. These people want to know exactly what illnesses and characters they are getting in a dog. Personally I find mix-breeds smarter and they have less illness. Shelters are the best place to get dogs. Pet stores owners should not be allowed to sell cats and dogs because this increases the puppy mills.

Tho it would be nice to be able to stop the backyard breeders, doing this would likely cause issues for the reputable breeders. Reputable breeders are NOT part of the overpopulation problem and should not be punished for bringing good quality purebred dogs into the world. I have no problem with mixes and rescues, and have had a few myself, but if there's something specific I want in a dog, then a purebred is the best choice.

I really don't know if I am right but I think I saw in a paper something about this and it said something like: alot of parents don't want to take the chance of putting a stray animal near their children, they may be wild or uncontrollable. Who knows o.o And also people always seem to want a "new" thing. People also have the right to choose what kind of animal they want. -.-
Also..animal cruelty is wrong..should be fixing animals not shooting them

We need to take responsibility for this problem. I live in a small town and there are over 2 tons of animal carcasses disposed of every week and 40% are pure breads. I hope that by telling people these kinds of statistics it will help them from trying to mate their animals because they think they will make "cute" puppies or kittens.

declare an "open hunting seaon" on the vermin who abuse and/or abandon these armies of strays your so worried about. all us "so called animal lovers do go to pounds & rescue shelters & adopt as many animals as we can home & feed. as for "too many"? how about "too many" packs of half-feral youths terrorising streets & housing estates? "too many" thugs/theives/junkies/rapists/wife-beaters/child-abusers blighting human society? "too many" dumb, semi-sentient, ill-gotten, sub-human vermin animal-haters using up my good air & poisoning existence in general? let's start eradicating those problems & leave nature to take care of animal populations as she has for millions of years before we came long & royally screwed things up.

The answer to dealing with unwanted pets is spaying and neutering. People have a right to chose the kind of pet they want, but they should "fix" them if they don't plan on breeding or showing them.
