but you don't act on them, it's just you randomly think about jumping off a bridge or throwing yourself in front of a train or things without meaning to think of it or quite wanting to do it? does that count as 'danger to yourself or others' that then they can tell on you or lock you up or stuff?

I have thoughts like these a lot. You forgot the one about driving in front of a semi. It took me a long time to admit them to my therapist. I was afraid of what she might do, too. I have a long history of suicide and depression. It turned out the I did not have anything to fear. When I did finally admitt to the thought I made a point of saying "just because I think about something does not mean that I will act on it" My therapist went through some other questions with me, like if I did feel like I was going to act on them what would I do, would I tell her or someone else, etc. She still makes me contract to safty when we have a difficult session. Chances are your doctor is not going to have you commited just for intrusive thoughts. If you start displaying other warning signs, like self mutilation or making more elaborate plans then they would probably be more concerned.

You know what? Everyone has thought about killing themselves at one point or another, whether it is just one time or just sometimes, or frequently wondering. It does not mean you are depressed or there is something mentally wrong with you. It's just something people wonder about, some more than others. Now if you are someone who is actually WANTING to do it rather than WONDERING, then I would say you need someone to talk to, maybe go out and see the miracles of life. Now if you telll your doctor, they will put you on antidepressants, then they will tell you a side effect of it is thoughts of suicide (which is a psychological think and being told you may have thoughts on suicide then you will have thoughts on suicide. Those few people who do not have the thoughts of suicide with the med did not really need the meds. Its like how all a doctors are saying most kids have ADD which is BS). Or they will send you to a psychiatrist and probably still put you on some kind of medication. The only way you will get locked up is to actually ATTEMPT or show severity to the subject such as drawings, cutting yourself hurting yourself or others etc... If you need someone to talk to e-mail me.

If you have ever attempted suicide at any point in your life--this will be what they want to know next. If the answer is no, they should recommend you to please speak to a psychiatrist to get to the bottom of why you are having these random thoughts. If the answer is yes, then you should be evaluated further for in-hospital treatment--and trust my first hand experience, being admitted to a hospital for treatment is a blessing in disguise if you utilize the group and/or individual therapy to its fullest.

I say you need some help. Your doctor didn't tell you to go see a psych doctor? If you are having these thoughts you need to be seen, call someone you are close to and have them take you to be checked out before you act on one. Good luck

No, they can't lock you up. And you're not alone having those random thoughts. Your doctor may recommend a counselor for you to see to talk about these thoughts.

They will try to help. As long as you don't act on the impulse they will try to get you proper treatment. If you are trying to get help they will probably do nothing cause lots of people get those ideas, especially from tv.

NO. Most doctors don't give a damn what you do or think like most of the ones I run into.

Nope... No one can control their thoughts. As an example. don't think of raping elephants... But you can control what you do with them... IMHO

I imagine it would depend on the doctor, but it very well could lead to trouble!
