Actually Mac's are pretty cheap for what you get. The macbooks are what, a 1000 bucks and you get more than you do with a new laptop from HP. Meaning, the specs are there, and the software that comes with a mac is generally better.
I love my new mac. But if you want a PC, a desktop is pretty cheap these days. just be careful buying upgrades from the manufacturer, they really price it up. Try to get a cheap barebones system from dell and then hit up newegg.com and get your upgrades, DVD burners, memory, sweet peripherals.
XP is good, OSX is awesome, it's safer from viruses, but more tools are written for windows.
you could also get ubuntu linux on either system and it's pretty great too. You can run linux and windows or linux and mac.
by the way, ifyou have an XP SP 2 disk, you can run xp on your mac with bootcamp. That makes it a real good deal.

Stay with Windows. Stay with XP.
I've read quite a few editorials about people having serious problems with Vista - it not recognizing parts, if you have speakers that aren't a specific kind you either get NO sound or crappy (Vista's *designed* that way - it's part of the DRM thing).
If your computer's not new, you may have some troubles running it the way it's supposed to be run.
Wait a year... the patches should be in the 10+ range and there will be less holes and more parts support.
Or... you could always do what I did when I got fed up with XP's crankiness - dual-boot XP and Ubuntu (Linux). I kept XP purely for the games that have DirectX and can't be played on Linux without paying for software.
Diablo 2 and others can be played on Linux, by the way.

Well I think windows vista is a mac rip off a lot of same features. Mac is simply better. You dont have to worry about a virus on a Mac.. they are better at video editing and other things. most software made is made for windows and mac both so you cant go wrong with buying a MAC

Windows Vista is very frustrating to work with since it asks you a ton of questions since they think it will "be safer" with you in mind. Windows has upgrades required on the computer's every time. Though Macs, have creativity and productivity in minds since they no not require daily, monthly, maintence. Plus, Leopard has this app. called "Time Machine" which lets you go back to a previous state in any window. It's like a automatic camera letting you rewind like tivo.

If you have used a PC all of your life going to a Mac is like trying to go from something great to something almost great but a challenge to learn and not woth all the hassle. Also it is harder to find things that are compatible with Macs. They are not worth the fancy price tag. Stick with PC. Besides, Pcs are more efficient, especially if you are already using one.

Personally I prefer a PC. Working on PC's for a living I find it's easier finding info. on PC's than MAC's . I have a friend of mine who is a whiz with a MAC but I suggest a PC so if you run into trouble it'll be easier to find help.

Since you play a lot of games, I would stick with the PC. Macintosh is better for more artistic use, such as graphic design.
