I saw a show on TV talking about how a guy's friend was over dosing and would throw up black stuff. What is this 'black stuff' and where does it come from?

Bile is dark green and can look black in poor light. Foods take on unusual hues when regurgitated. But if I was writing that show, it'd be blood.

Blood can end up in the stomach from the stomach itself bleeding (ulcer, wound), from bleeding in the head or throat (nose, mouth) and being swallowed (usually automatic), or from just below the stomach in the small intestine (although the system is supposed to go one way, it doesn't always).
