I am an Orthodontist and can probably help you with this question. Placing braces if fairly easy and pai free. The first step is to clean your teeth with a coarse material called pumice. The purpose is to clean your teeth. The next step is to etch and prime your teeth for bonding the brackets.
Bonding brackets is done in 2 ways. Majority of the orthodontist place the brackets directly on your teeth with glue and shine a blue light to make harden the glue. This is called direct bonding. The disadvantage with this technique, it takes long time and is hard to position the brackets just right.
Fewer Orthodontists (including myself) place brackets by Indirect bonding. In this technique the brackets are positioned on your models and transferred to a glue or plastic tray. Once your teeth are cleaned, cleaned, etched and primed, the entire tray is placed in your mouth and the glue is cured with blue light. This cuts down the placement time and also results in more precise bracket placement. Studies also show that Indirect bonding cuts down the total treatment time by 6 - 8 months. The disadvantage with this technique is that it is labor intensive and technique sensitive but once you do it couple of times, it's a piece of cake.
Once your brackets are placed, a very light wire called Nitinol is placed. And then you can walk out. Depending on your case and the kind of wire placed, you will be seen anywhere between 6-10 week intervals. During this appointments, they may place ties back on (if there is still crowding to be relieved) or change into stiffer stainless steel arch wires
The pain should go away in a day or two. Take Tylenol and eat soft foods until pain subsides. Also use the wax on sore spots / brackets. I cannot suggest the colors but right now the most popular color in my office is Halloween colors. Hope that helps

Relax, honey. Now it's been 23 years since I had mine put on, but I can't imagine the technique has changed THAT much. By the way, the spacers just about killed me, too.
The orthodontist will use a cement-like glue to stick the individual braces on each tooth (no pain) then put the wire over the top of the braces and connect them to the bands. You may feel some pressure when he/she holds the brace against your tooth, but it's not bad at all.
When you get home, your mouth may ache, and continue to ache for a couple of days, but it's not an agonizing pain.
Good luck!

welll spacers are a bit differnt than braces.
No, braces do not hurt when you get them put on. what they do is take the brackets and glue them to your teeth. then they slip bands with cement onto your back molars. finally, they slip the wire through them (and in some cases fit you with bands). The procedure does not hurt at all! when my daughter got hers on she almost fell asleep in the chair.
However, about 1-2 hours after you leave the orthodontists office, you will begin to feel some tenderness in the teeth that the brackets are on. They will be sensitive to touch, but this is tempoary and will only last a few days (a week at the absolute most!) and this will happen after you get them tightened too, but its nothing compared to getting teeth pulled or anything. just take some tyelonel and you'll be fine.
think of the braces as an acessory. tons of people have them and you won't have to live with them forever.

Holly what your friends think shouldn't matter if you need braces and don't get them it could cause some horrible pain to the overlapping teeth as you get older. Your roots start bumping together and boy do I remember that pain!!!!!! Don't neglect your teeth. Here's my advise: Do not do the clear!! Why? The clear is clear and basically invisible but they are very bulky and can be seen baring on your lips when you mouth is close. I have the regular metal braces with silver bands, they blend with the metal and they barely bulge! Good luck!

braces do not hurt while they are being applied, they put a mild glue material on yoru teeth, and then apply the bracket, which will hold your wire, then they put the correct size wire on, and secure it with a rubber band,
it will not hurt for about an hour, then it will ache for a few days, but it wont last forever
the most important thing is, use the wax they give you to coat the brackets on all points of friction so you dont get mouth sores, they also go away but they are sore too
and
brush your teeth as much as they reccomend and more to avoid tooth decay aroung the bracket, and bands
good luck, be brave you will get through it

Braces don't hurt when they actually put them on. When I got mine on I didn't feel any pain until a few minutes after I left the orthodontist's. Afterwards though, I was in A LOT of pain (for about a week too). You'll be fine though, not to worry.
Hope I helped!

there is not much to worry about. spacers are the worst part of orthodontistry because they hurt like hell. braces on the other hand do not hurt when they are being applied but they will take a while. they do not 'kill' like spacers but they will feel....annoying...and will give a little 'tooth ache' feeling when you push your teeth together but dont worry, after about 4 days (at most) they will feel perfect!!

Braces hurt a lot when you first get them on, but there is great satifaction in having straight teeth when you finely get them off. Your teeth will likely hurt a bit everytime they are tightend but after a couple of days your mouth will adjust to the tightning of them. Congradulations and don't be afraid.

Only the first couple of days, starting a couple of hours after you get them.
