Probably to discourage people from spamming the board with lots of totally pointless questions.
(Right. We've seen how well THAT works! Not you personally, but there are a few posters who come to mind...)
Edited: In response to spiralia8's point... True, spammers won't care about points, but since you only get 100 points to start it limits the number of questions they can ask before they have to either (a) abandon the account, or (b) start putting back into the system by offering answers. Granted, it isn't the best system, since spammers can spam answers just as easily, but I'm just trying to get inside the heads of those who designed Y!A in the first place. I never said it was an efficient system... ;-)

I didn't know this until I asked my 2nd question recently. That doesn't make sense. Prairiecrow says its to discourage spammers, but why would spammers care about silly points anyway? I don't even understand why we even get points. I haven't been doing this very long so there is probably lots I don't know about Yahoo Answers yet.

I believe the idea is to help provide several answers for each question. The system only works if people answer more than they ask.

You need the help of others so it costs you, so what? Are points really that important to you. They're only earthly things! You expect to get paid for asking for help? Do you expect to get help for free (on Yahoo Answers)? Good night!

The point additions and deductions are spelled out very well. Those are the rules. If you don't like it, don't post any questions on Yahoo!Answers.

Maybe to prevent tons of stupid questions from being asked...since people lose points for asking questions, maybe they will put more thought into them.
