The largest brown bears ever recorded weigh in the 1500 lb range. Yes the kodiaks are some of the worlds biggest but they can also reach that weight in Russia. Don't believe that internet link, its a fake story that has been circulating for quite some time. The largest grizzlies can stand between 10-11 feet tall when on 2 legs, and over 4 feet at the shoulder. This is second only to the polar bear in animal size for a land animal.

This is the record bear according to the Boone and Crockett Records. This is a world record bear that actually tied two other grizzlies taken in British Columbia. It is highly unusual to have 3 animals tie for the same world record.

I don't know about Alaska but Wyoming Territory at the turn of the last Century posted a $10,000 reward in gold for a 2,000 lb. 18' long Grizzle that was terrorizing the countryside.

Someone finally claimed the reward. More than a hundred bullets were found in the bear's body and five in the brain (besides the one that killed it). I heard that the bear's brain is in the Smithsonian, but that may be an 'urban legend.'
