Crate training is highly recommended(do not listen to those telling you not to use one), but young puppies should not be crated for long periods of time. Rule of thumb is puppy can be crated for hours matching age plus one (example: if puppy is 3 months he should not be crated for more than 4 hours). If you need to crate longer the dog will be fine just be ready to get the dog outside and make sure to give lots of exercise time to make up for long confinement time.

I just rasied 2 more pups in my home and they were doing 8-10 hours easy by the time they were 4 months old. Crate training is the best idea ever. all my dogs are crate trained and they love their own personal crates/dens.

Old rule of thumb : what ever the age in months, that
is the max the pup to be crated. . In your case . . four months
means a MAX of four hours. Always best to start off with
shorter periods of time and slowly work up to that mark.

The pup has an extremely small bladder. 8 hours is really pushing it. Ideally, someone can let the pup out at least once in the middle of that 8 hours to do its business. That would be much less stressful on the pup and the owner as well.

If you are keeping it in a crate to housebreak it. It is much easier to keep it in the bath tub. A puppy or dog will not pee or anything in the same place where they are sleeping. This will help them and it usually only takes about a couple of weeks to housebreak. I never kept mine in a crate. I agree with the other answer how would you like being in a crate?

how would you feel if you were kept in a crate all the time ? he should only be crated if you are going out of the house or to bed
