My boyfriend and I shared 2 cars. Both under his name. We broke up and he signed the ownership over to me. I have the certification, emission test, used car package, and signed ownership. I just have to go to the DMV and get insurance. We agreed that he would give me a month because I paid for both cars and paid mechanic bills as well. The car I gave him is now a write-off from an at-fault accident and no longer has a car. I said he cannot have my car but he claims it is his car. He says he is going to report it as stolen. Is it his car? Can he do this?

What a jerk!..He is grasping at straws if he signed the paperwork over to you

Since he is pulling that I would suggest that your 'wait one month' is up.

WHen the DMV opens tomorrow be first in line and transfer the ownership of the car. Then let him call the PD. All you have to do is show them the title papers.

THEN.. I would suggest that you either keep the car out of sight for a while and have an alarm put in it or change the ignition lock just to keep the car from wandering away one night since he prob. still has a set of keys - right? If he physically gets posession of the car its YOU that will have to deal with the police.. not him.

After that he is going to have to fight you in court and you have the signed papers .. that is a tough thing to overcome for him.

good luck

If he signed the title over, or "release of liability" he's outta gas. You just need to get down to the DMV asap either way. Can he report the car stolen? Sure, but he has to prove he's the legal owner of the vehicle....as long as you have a signed over title or a copy of the bill of sale, you'll be fine.

i own a shop, and he can do it ,but whether or not he can prove it is a different story,he can say anything, but what ever he says he has to prove, hold on to all the bills you have you might need them for court, and he may just back off out of the whole thing also,id go and get the title changed to my name if i could on it,this is going to be a tricky situation though until its resolved, good luck with this.i hope this help,s.

Heh. Not if you are named as owner on the title. Better file immediately.

The car belongs to the person whose name appears on the title.

If your name is on there, tell him to go to hell. If HIS name is on there, be very nice to him.

That's about the bottom line of it.

If he signed the title over to you, it is yours.

No "backsies."

he wrecked his car and that is his problem, not yours.
