CAD = computed assisted drafting. Mostly it reduces the number of human errors in drawing. It adds a great deal of consistency to things like line width, printing, abbr and lettering. Basically takes the art out of drafting.

CAD - computer aided drafting

I'm an engineer and it does save a lot of time when developing parts. With CATIA, we can design a part and directly feed it into the CNC machines.
