Really listen to the compliment and accept and acknowledge it.
My husband complimented me once and I brushed it off, he said that when I did that...his words had no power behind them and then the compliment meant nothing.
On hearing this I finally understood that when someone says something beautiful to you about you, they mean it and you should acknowledge it.
I now hold their eyes with mine and give a heartfelt thank you. It makes them feel great afterward too.

Just offer a polite "thank you"!
Often times - people who have a hard time accepting/responding to a compliment or even a gift - it is because they usually feel as if they are not worthy of it - when perhaps maybe they are worthy of it - however, they would rather be the giver than the receiver.
Ask yourself this - (for the most part) am I a giver and not a taker? Are you a nurturer/caregiver type?
People that are "selfless" are people that instinctively (by nature) GIVE - it's in their blood. Thus making it hard/awkward to respond/reply to the reverse.

I had a problem with this. I could get a complement on a dress or something and I would say something like", Oh this old dress, I've had it for ever". Basically putting my self down. Until I said that they didn't know that the dress was old.
Now, from now on just say "thank you" And smile. This will let them know that the complement was greatly appreciated. To break the awkward silence ask them how they've been or what they are up to.

Just say "thank you" and smile, and in your mind tell yourself that you deserve the compliment.
Try complimenting others too, but make sure the compliments are simple and SINCERE, otherwise every compliment you receive will feel phoney too.

Accept the fact that you have done something good. Usually when we are insecure about our self, we can't acknowledge that we had done something good. It may be uncomfortable at first but believe in you and take the compliment.

Most people I know get embarrassed when being complimented.
I'm in the same boat as you - I never know what to say.
However, "thank you" will never be rude or considered uncouth. Perhaps the silence is because they're expecting you to complement them in return (which you aren't required to do)

Maybe you need to believe in what they are saying! Convince yourself that you deserve the compliment & believe that it is true! Take it as an ego-boost! YOU DESERVE IT!

Just say thank you.
If you think of something else to say right away, follow up with that. Graciousness is never inappropriate and always fits.

A pure and unadulterated response would be a nice cheerful smile.
