try 'une bete de foire" or "une bete curieuse". Is is not a literal translation but it conveys the idea.
"Don't look at me as if I were a circus freak" translate as "Ne me regarde pas comme une bete curieuse"
Note there is an accent circonflexe on the 1st e of bete.
