I have been associated with Franciscans as a lay person for the last 10 years. The founder of their order is St. Francis of Assisi, son of a wealthy businessman, who took a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience. After the death of St. Francis, it broke up into several groups. I think there are at least seven major groups. The Order of Friars Minor, OFM Capuchins, Convectuals, (contemplative) TOR, and others which I cannot recall right now. They have also a Third Order which is for lay people. The original group which I belong to are also contemplatives but they act out their spirituality in the secular world. They live and work with poor and marginalised sectors of society. They have a website if you to know more about them.
Peace and every blessing!

Not all Franciscan priests are monks in monasteries. I used to attend a chapel in another city that was run by Franciscans. They do not marry and so have no families to raise. They do take vows of chastity and poverty and can be real cool people to talk to. They tend to be very tolerant. I am not exactly sure about their daily routine but I am very familiar with their spirituality. It can best be summed up in the famous prayer composed by St. Francis who they model their lives after. I will not type the prayer here but it is easy to find on line or in any Catholic bookstore. Check it out because even to protestants and non-christians this is a totally cool prayer. Basically Franciscan spirituality is all abou peace and love and giving.

Franciscans generally take vows of chastity and poverty. Because of the poverty vow, I think the majority live in Monasteries and convents.
