We have removed some tile and there is quite a bit of mortar or thinset underneath...approx 1/8 to 1/4 inch in some places. We can chip it away with a chizzle but that takes alot of time. We can grind it away with a grinder but that is messy.

I just found another source that mentions you can rent an "air chisel" that is basically a mini-jackhammer. Seems like that would have been the best thing to use in my case.

You have answered your own question!

Thin-set is a concrete product and can only be removed one of two ways: chisel or grinder.

I recommend a wide masonry chisel (4" wide and hefty weight) and a ton of patience. Good music and an occasional adult beverage can make this process pass faster.

Welcome to the world of tile repair. You have discovered the only two ways of removing it. If you are replacing the tile you can spread thinset over the old, and work the tile into place. If you are trying to reuse the old tile, it has to be scraped.
