I used to work for Decco, the company that manufactures 90% of the waxes for post harvest agricultural products (fruits and vegetables).
The wax is edible, and not harmful. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The fruit/vegetables are rinsed in industrial strength bleach, to get rid of the bugs, Then the wax is applied.
The wax serves two purposes:
Prevent dehydration
Add an aesthetic shine.
The wax cannot be removed.

Apples if not organic during their growing process can be sprayed with pesticides. Once harvested if sprayed with wax, under the wax can still be pesticide residue and dirt. Wash away the wax and you'll wash away a lot more stuff that you don't want to eat.

It keeps the apple fresher. It is not unhealy it is edible wax. They use wax in chocolate candies to make them so that you can handle them and not melt in your fingers. You can peel it off the apples or just wash them and eat it. It is not digested.

The wax itself isn't harmful... its the chemicals that get stuck in the wax (pesticides and such). Go get yourself some FIT (thats the brand name) fruit and veg cleaner. No more waxy apples... or pears, or cucumbers, or lemons, or tomatoes...
Best of luck!
