Romero is a Spaniard last name. Romero iis a herb (spice) the equivalent of rosemary, last names were usually related to the kind of labor, trade, region or physical characteristics. For example Fleishman is a Jewish last name meaning butcher (Yiddish).

Romero appears to be a Spanish surname. (the website gives information about it) Spain and Italy are not that far away, though, so most likely, Italians with this surname have a Spanish ancestor who passed on the name.
