I seriously want to get into photography, and I'm hoping to eventually run my own studio. My problem is that I need a digital so I can practice without the cost of film & developing. I want the D80, but it's going to take me a long time to scrape together the money for it. If I go with the D50, I will most likely upgrade at some point in the future.

Which would you do? Wait for the one you really want, or go ahead and start practicing with something you can afford right now?

I'll go with Morey000 here. If you are READY to get started now, I think the D50 is an excellent choice without too many apologies. As Morey said, you will be able to use any lenses that you buy on your dream camera of the future, so just get started.

The D40 is a plus-minus situation. I think a "pro" would want to additional features and lens versatility found in the D50. The D40 only has 3 autofocus zones instead of 5, which I assume means you can only assign the spot meter to 3 zones instead of 5. The D40 can not autofocus some of the older lenses, which you might be attracted to for their price. The D40 has a nicer LCD, though...

With that in mind, though, don't buy a drawer full of mediocre lenses. Okay, start with the "usual" 18-55 entry-level lens if the dollars are tight, but when you expand, try your best to make meaningful and wise purchases of pro-level lenses.

It's a good upgrade, going from 6mp to 10mp. The menus and control interface are a little different (the D50 has only 1 wheel, while the D80 has 2 control wheels), but there's a difference in performance--the D80 is more responsive. It has a markedly better AF system and a better metering system. The LCD on the back is much bigger too, for easier review. So, overall, you're getting a much better camera and more resolution by going to the D80. You'll be very happy with the upgrade!

If money is tight, you might as well save the money on the body for now, and spend it on lenses. DSLRs are still evolving pretty quickly, and whatever you buy now will be worth beans in 5 years.

There's no doubt that the D80 is a 'better' camera, but the new D40 is a solid, clean 6Mp DSLR and will take excellent quality images. There are very few professional situations that you need more than 6Mp. The D40 image JPEG image quality is a noticeable step up from the D50. It's compact and light, and comes with a decent kit lens to get you started.

Here's an excellent and thorough review of the D40

hehe, the canon eos 5d is how i would go. BUT, you're a nikon person. if you plan on upgrading in the near future i would go with the cheaper model so you can get the hang of things. it's nice to have a camera that you can use without having to be so worried about it getting ruined somehow. i always hear that having a better camera doesn't make you a better photographer and i tend to agree with that. i think it would be a waste of your money if you bought the more expensive camera and decided it was something you didn't want. also, have you actually held these cameras in your hands? that is important too. you need to look at where all of the bells and whistles are and decide if that is going to be comfortable to you. have you done a side by side comparison? if not, go to www.dpreview.com. that's an excellent website. good luck!!

haha I agree with Jenny, the 5D is so the way to go ^^. But if you want a Nikon its your choice. But if I had a choice between the D80 or D50 I would choose the D80 just because it has pro features you can learn to use later on but use automatic while your learning.
