I have a 7 month old beagle puppy, he has recently been getting up at 630 in the morning, because he wants to go out and be fed, he used to wake up at 8 when i did. I was wondering what i could do to get him back on the old schedule. I've tried running him a lot to wear him out before bed, but nothing seems to make him sleep in. Does any one have any advice. We usually go to bed around 12 or 1 am.

Put him out before you retire for the night. When he wants out at 630 am tell him no it's bed time. My sam sometimes does this from time to time. I have to make sure he drops his doggie bombs before coming in for night or else he will cry like a baby to get out.

There is one other thing that you might think about. Perhaps it is not the going outside that is a reward for waking earlier but the food. Try this, when he wakes, take him out to potty then go back to bed. Do Not feed him, play with him or give any other reward except for a "Good Boy" for going potty outside. Even if you are not tired go back to bed for at least 30 minutes. Once your pup realises that food comes later in the morning, chances are , he will be more likely to sleep until you wake on your own. Animals are incredibly stimulated to change or adapt their behaviour for food or treats. Smart little things aren't they?

Puppies are a lot like babies...they're rather unpredictable!!! Firstly, a pup of 7 months shouldn't be RUNNING. Dogs shouldn't be run until they're a year old; their hips may deteriorate early. Secondly, chances are this is a phase. As your pup grows up, he'll begin sleeping longer hours and accomodating your schedule. In the meantime, you may as well expect to accomodate his. I would suggest dragging yourself out of bed for a few mornings and taking him for a brisk, 20-minute walk.

As he is getting older a puppy needs less sleep. Our pups often wake us up at 4:30.

Trust me, you HAVE to. I have a dog that wakes up at 5:30, and we let her out.
Trust me, don't ignore her, or she will be peeing all over your house. And you will have to lie to people and tell them the pee stain on the carpet is just spilt lemonade ;) hehe
He is just a puppy, and maybe he is just so full of energy, and wants to explore his new nature and home.
It probably will stop, since he is just a puppy.
My dog was hyper, an early riser, (way early riser), and peed all over the house, but she is now 3, and is pretty mellow, house trained, and sleeps in pretty good.
GOOD LUCK! :)

If he needs to potty at that early hour, take him out, but don't interact with him at all. Put him back in his crate and ignore him until it's time to get up. It's great that you're making sure that he gets enough exercise - just be patient with him while he tries this new behavior of, "Let's wake everyone up and play!" If you ignore it, the behavior will stop, but you need to be consistent!

Don't answer to his request to go out so early, he'll learn to know that he won't get anything by whining. Or if that doesn't work, try giving him a good exercise before bed, then he'll be tired and hopefully will sleep in.
