you can get back (driving across the border)with a driver's license- you are not required a passport til Jan 2008(for driving) But if you fly out , you will need a passport to get back in..

I worked for customs for 10 years. Contrary to popular belief you do not just need a drivers license, you must also have proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or naturalization papers, green card, expired or valid passport, etc as well as government picture ID if you are driving across the border until next year. (at which time you'll need a passport) You are not always asked for this proof of citizenship but you are required to have it and could be turned around if you don't have it.

Flying into the US you need a valid Passport.

Hope that helps,

Hi there!
I live near the Canadian border in NY, so I go to Montreal frequently. You currently do not need a passport to drive across (yet).

Last weekend my husband used his driver's license to get across. I have to use my passport since I'm a naturalized citizen.

Passports will be required beginning in 2008.

In case you are traveling with children, be sure to have a note from the other parent giving you permission to travel with the kids across the border. One of my friends had an issue taking his children, who are teens. They are concerned about custody abductions. You also need original birth certificates for IDs for children.

Have fun on your trip!

No. yet... particularly some the crossings are over water, particularly by using the St. Lawrence river. There are costs for the bridges, yet, that's accident; there no value for the border itself. BTW - you like your passport to come again into the USA, yet, technically, to no longer get into Canada.

I heard that you'll need a pasport to drive accross starting in like July.... not sure though. I bet the place you go to get your passport would know though.
