Got to be honest...........this isnt delving into the ethos of military and war. It may be because planes are droping 10 tonne bombs all over the place and soldiers on the grounds are spraying bullets everywhere. Just an idea.

A war, especially current wars, are not a sport event.

In other words, a war is not an event in which the combatants engage in their activity in an agreed upon location. While for countries like USA this would be the preferred avenue to engage in warfare, other countries may see benefit to warring in urban or suburban areas populated by non-combatants.

These situations may give an edge to the defender or attacker.

For example, Muslim terrorists use a mosque as a defensive position surrounded by civilians in order to gain a strategic advantage over more moral troops (such as US or NATO).

Some strategic locations, such as an outlying island housing a military installation may contain only military personnel. In this situation all (loosely) people are combatants. Whether they are willing combatants is based to some extent on that persons' dedication to their cause.

In conclusion, IMHO, the loss of non-combatants is due to choice of location. While the US would love to have a "Pied Piper" lead the insurgents out of Baghdad in to an open area far from any civilian area, this is just not possible. I don't see any way to trick them or entice the terrorists from their locations to a war zone.

I suppose I do not understand enough about this topic to know why civilians would remain in an war zone when the yknow they place themselves at risk. Maybe the people who stay have no where else to go? I would assume anyone who could, would leave if they could...

Collateral damage is always a part of war. There are newer weapons being made to decrease the likelihood of this. However, the idea that there will never be another innocent killed is quite impossible. You may note the media playing on the collateral damage. The enemy uses the media to sway the views of the world to their side.

The answer is as sad as it is real, you ever hear of the ancient saying? "For the greater good, sacrifices must be made" This means the head man has to make very difficult decisions, whether he's an ignorant idiot or an intelligent Einstein. The bad guys hide behind and around civilians so they are in as much fault as the soldiers are for the innocent lives taken everyday.... Bottom line................say no to war!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if the objective of a war is to win, then anyone in the warzone is not safe. If the US would fight the war in Iraq the same way they attacked Germany during WWII it would have been over long ago.

Do you support the nonsense of a P-C war?
