I enjoy downloading games to try out on my desktop, however, recently I have not been able to play them once I've installed them. I get a message "failed to initialize d3d. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Click start then click run and type dxdiag and look for video and run tests. If your computer is not capable of running D3d games, you will see something here. Also, make sure you have the latest version of DirectX which is 9.0c for XP and 10.0 for Vista.. if you do not, then go to microsoft.com and download 9.0c...

If your computer is older, the video card (graphics adapter) may not support the latest version of DirectX, but it would have to be a very, very old system for this to be true.

Many games use software called DirectX. You might try downloading and reinstalling the latest version. Just google DirectX and it will take you Microsoft's site for download. That will hopefully solve your problem.

check for the latest video card drivers and/or direct x (microsoft.com/directx). many new games will not work with your video card because the directX is not supported.
